Suffolk Junior Closed 2011 - It's a Family Affair

Martlesham Leisure Squash Club was the host venue for the Suffolk Junior County Closed this year. With an extraordinary number of entries, over 70 across the age groups ranging from U9 to U19, it was certainly set to be a great weekend. The main clubs within Suffolk, Ipswich Sports Club, Martlesham Leisure, Moreton Hall and Stowmarket Squash Club were all well represented and credit must go to the County Coaches Arthur Gaskin, Katie Lawrence, Martin Levens, Melvin Padmore and John Mead for all of their efforts and enthusi-asm with the players. There were some excellent performances over the weekend and the younger age groups were no exception! The Boys U9 final was a nail biting 3-2 thriller between Tate Harms and Sebastian Milbank. The Turmel trio dominated in their events despite playing up an age group as they all won their re-spective events. Josh, Lucy and Ben have all competed extensively in Bronze and Silver ESR events across the country and have continued to improve upon their National Rankings. Another family to fair well was the Beecrofts. Brothers Gus and Billy were also winners in their cate-gories. Billy keen to make sure older brother Gus doesn't take all the limelight! Bryony Paczy-Smith was a force to be reckoned with in the Girls U17 event, fully living up to her County Number 1 status. Amber Sparrow prevailed in the Girls U13 event that was most keenly con-tested; the round robin series of games provided a number of shock results between all six of the girls in this category. Amber's recent improvement however, showed new strengths to her game and her success was greatly deserved. Well done to all those that took part over the weekend!
England Squash & Racketball have echoed the WSF's thoughts on the IOC's announcement that squash has been included on the Olympic Games shortlist for 2020. Squash has been included with the likes of wakeboarding, sport climbing, rollersports, karate and the martial art of wushu. The IOC will decide which sports, if any, will be added to the Olympic Games Programme from 2020 at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires in September 2013.
